The reason policy wonks do Great Lakes work begins with the Great Lakes themselves.  Over the last three years, I’ve come to know one of them, Huron, the forgotten Great Lake, and fallen in love.  Sunrises, in particular, have revealed something essential about water.

I celebrated these Huron sunrises in Last Summer on Lake Huron.

“June 20, 2017.  In the hour before sunrise, the light over the lake is a secret whispered only to a few.  At 5:38 this morning, I lingered on the little bluff overlooking Huron for no longer than two minutes but took in a scene that moved me all day: the last lingering violet storm clouds from the previous evening, stripes of pale orange light between them and, most of all, the reflective waters, unhurriedly dabbing at the shore.”

Evenings aren’t bad either.  Light and water, in any combination, are an inspiration to keep going.
